A step-by-step guide to making the most of your 24 hours: culture, history and the best tapas route in the centre.
Start your day early to enjoy the morning light on the limestone of the city's oldest monuments.
Start at the Cathedral of Nuestra Señora del Prado. Admire its single nave and imposing altarpiece. Afterwards, stroll through the adjoining gardens, the locals' favourite meeting point.
Walk to the Church of San Pedro, a Gothic gem. Then head to the Santiago neighbourhood to see the oldest church in the city, home to its famous Mudéjar ceiling.
Located next to Parque Gasset. An essential interactive visit to understand the city's relationship with Cervantes' work. Perfect before lunch.
In Ciudad Real you don't just have lunch, you "go for cañas" (small beers). It is time to enjoy the food that comes included with your drink.
Look for the bars on the streets around the Plaza Mayor. With every drink you will get a generous tapa of pisto manchego, migas or pork with tomato. Three beers and you've had lunch!
At 13:00 (or 12:00 depending on the season) make sure you are in the Plaza Mayor to watch the parade of Don Quixote figures on the balcony of the Casa del Arco.
After a La Mancha coffee, finish your visit with the city's architectural icons.
Go inside to see its courtyard and monumental staircase. It is one of the most beautiful civic buildings in the province and often hosts exhibitions by local artists.
End the day at the city's most important national monument. Watching the sunset through its horseshoe arches is the best visual farewell to the city.
The best part: The whole route is on foot, and the city is completely flat.
Estimated spend: 25–35 € (including museum entry and the tapas route).
Local tip: If you have an hour to spare, visit the Provincial Museum to see the palaeontological remains found in the area.
To make the most of your day in the La Mancha capital, keep these local tips in mind.
The historic centre is completely flat and pedestrianised, so any comfortable shoes will do. In summer bring sun protection and water: temperatures can exceed 40°C. In winter, wrap up warm in the mornings.
The Carillon Clock performs at 12:00, 13:00 and 20:00. Museums usually close on Mondays. Restaurants serve lunch from 13:30 to 16:00 and dinner from 20:30. Plan your stops around these times.
If you arrive by car, park around the Ronda de la Mata or next to Parque Gasset. There are plenty of free spaces and from there it is a 10-minute walk to the centre.
With a few extra hours you can extend your visit with one of these nearby experiences that complement your day in the city.
The Corral de Comedias, the arcaded Plaza Mayor and the D.O. aubergines. The perfect combination of culture and food just a short hop from Ciudad Real.
Boardwalks over the wetland, birdwatching and La Mancha nature at its purest. A short visit (1–2 hours) that is well worth it.
